Arverne

9 March, 2002

The area known as Arverne is in The Rockaways and is bounded by Beach 72nd Street, to the West, Edgemere Av. to the North and Beach 39th Street to the East. Half of this Atlantic Ocean coastal community is occupied by low- and mid-rise co-op residential buildings constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. The Eastern half of Arverne is a barren area with whole vacant blocks, decaying streets and a troubled history. According to http://www.farrockaway.com, Arverne was a beachfront resort area from 1888 to 1908. By 1930, Arverne became an area filled with residents on public assistance. Regarded as a slum by NYC transportation and development czar Robert Moses, hundreds of Arverne houses were razed in 1964. Plans to develop the area over the decades have yet to be realized.
